Products and Quotients of Monomials (CA SS: 10.0)

Today, we learned the power to a power rule. It states that if you have (ab*)^, it becomes a^b*^. That is just one way to simplify the expression. We also learned that if there are negative exponents, you put the numeral or variable with the negative exponent below the fraction bar. That is called the definition for negative exponents. After the lesson check, we went over some of the problems that we needed clarificaton on like, 5c*. The exponent is negative, by the way. We had to put it in a form using positive exponents. It became 5 over c to the fourth. That is what we did today.

10/28/10 Today Mr.Gerson went over yesterday's homework. For example: pg 212 #81, x^3a= X^4*x^6. The first step is to use product of powers for x^4 and x^6. For example: x^4+6= x^10. The second step is to get rid of all the xs and think 3a=10. The third step is to use the division property of equality. a=10/3. The next thing we did in class was the lesson check on last night's homework and notes. After we corrected the lesson check, Mr. Gerson gave us some notes. We learned about the products and quotients of monomials. Monomial is a term and a whole number. It's also an expression that is the product of numerals and the variable. For example: 3,-3, and 2xy^4. Binomials are polynomial with exactly 2 terms. Basically its 5x+5xy. Trinomial is a polynomial with three terms. For example, 5x*8y*45xy^8. Poynomial is anything more than1 and a constant is a term with no variables. For product of monomials are (3p^5*q^2) (4p^2*q^3)! Mr.Gerosn told us steps, so its easier to solve them; which are: 1. signs 2. numerals 3.variable in an alphabetic order. For example: (3p^5*q^2) (4p^2*q^3)
=3*4 p^5+2 q 3+2
=12p^7q^5

products and quotients of monomials
Today we learned about monomial and sorta learned about binomial and trinomial. a monomial is an expression that is either a numeral, variable, or a product of numerals and variables with whole number exponents. The difference between a term and a monomial is that a monomial has no negative exponent but a term does. For example, -2xy^-2 is a term but -2x/y^2 is a monomial. and mr gerson said to organize an expression in alphabetical order like
(3p^5q^2)(4p^2q^3)
=3x4p^5+^2q^2+^3
=12p^7q^5

Journal Entry # (10/28/10)

After going over our yesterday's previous homework,and taking our lesson check on product of powers& quotient of powers, power to power etc. We started on notes about products and quotients of monomials.
WHAT IS MONOMIAL YOU ASK?
It is a variables with whole number exponents, and its different then term. heres some examples;
3,-3,x,3x,2xy2 ARE monomial
2x-2y ---> 2y/x2
5x1/2 ---> 5√x
These two examples above ARE NOT monomial^
We also went over binomial, trimonial and constant as well.(Basically learned poynomial)
Constant are numerals only, and whole number do not include negative,fraction or rational numbers.
Heres 'product of power' example)
(3p^5*q^2) (4p^2*q^3)
=3*4 p^5+2 q 3+2
=12p^7q^5
Now,heres 'quotient of to a power' example.
-32x^15y^4/8x^14y^6
=-4x^15-14y^7-6
=-4xy

*Look for 1)signs 2)numerals 3)variable in an alphabetic order.

Combine like terms and use "Multiplying Powers with Like Bases" rule.

today in class we started off by asking MR.Gerson questions about the homework(212 1-39:odd). We then took a lesson check based on it. after the lesson check the class took notes on products and quotients of monomials. A monomial is an expression that is either a numeral, a variable, or a product of numerals and variables. Mr. Gerson also taught us to solve in steps. Signs, numerals, and Variables.

ex. Multiplying-
(7t^5)(4t^3)=
7t^5*4t3=
28t^8

ex. Dividing-
4x^5/2x^2=
4x/2x=
2x:subtract the exponents
2x^3

Associative Property: (7X6)x^2
Simplify: 42x^2

(8m^-3)(-4m^4)(m^-4) Given
8 x (-4) Combine Numerals
-32 (m^-3)(m^4)(m^-4) Simplify
M^-3+4+(-4) Combine Like variables
-32m^-3 Simplifty
-32/m^3 Make Monomial? (Not sure on that one)
