Proportions (CA SS: 5.0)

Every time I teach proportions I think of this video.

I like proportion portions. I like proportions portions. Because I like, PROPORTIONS!!!

p.150 (1-9:odd, 25-29:odd)
Alternate GATE assignment p.151 (37, 40-43:all)

Journal Entry, 10-8-10:
Today we learned how to solve proportions. Since we had no lesson check, we had more time to discuss it. First we talked about analogies, and also about the new property, which is "Means-Extremes Property." For our last example, a word problem, we discussed the shorter and less thinking way to solve 0.5a=125. You just multiply both sides by 2. Also for a word problem, you have to remember where the units go, or else the answer will be wrong.
Example: m/4=7/6
6m=7x4 Means-Exremes property
6m=28
1/6(6m)=1/6(28)
1m=28/6 or 4
m=4

Today I learned that there is a property that allows you to cross multiply to solve a proportion. It is called the Means-Extremes Property. The outer numbers are the Means and the inner numbers are the Extremes. For Example, if you have
3/4=6/8 the 3 and the 8 are the Means and the 4 and the 6 are the extremes. Also we discussed how analogies are basically like proportions.

we need to write the whole problem too right???

rawr making me explain the whole process again D:<

ok go on your email.....u see those tabs on the top left corner of your gmail, it says calender, reader, web, etc. OK click on the one that says MORE. then a little tab pops out then click EVEN MORE. then it redirects you to a new page. Finally you press the BLOGGER link/button and from there it's self explanatory.

Journal Entry, October 7th, 2010:
Today,we talked about analogies and proportions. Some students gave Mr. Gerson examples. Then, we did some problems on the board and talked about the Means-Extremes Property. This is an example of a problem we did:
A scale on a map says that 0.5 cm represents 25 km. On the map, a measurement between 2 cities is 5 cm. What is the actual distance?
x= actual distance
0.5 cm/25 km = 5 cm/x km
0.5x = 5(25)
0.5x = 125
2(0.5x) = 2(125)
1x = 250
x = 250 km

Well according to eric, they have until sunday night, but i think it should be on friday only. That way its fair to the people who post on weeknights.

if we r in gate is the alternate prob optional or mandatory?

MLYHOOPS said...

i dont get how to justify my answers when we r doing the word problems! i mean i do them in a way so u dont justify

Natasha L Per.4 TA said...

Wow sean why are you on soo late shouldn't go have gone to sleep by then???

@Mat.
no it's not mandatory hint the word "alternate"

Do we have to justify on the Chapter 3 Wrap-Up?

AnalissaTPer.4 said...

i dont get how to do #40 part b. plzzzzz someone help me!!

MLYHOOPS said...

thanks natasha. im just going to do them anyway

Paige H. Per.4 said...

@ analissa
ummm...u pretty much just make a proportion...ya i dont realy kno how 2 explain it...

Anonymous said...

so is the wrap up3 mandetory???

MatteoMTAPer.4 said...

Yes

MatteoMTAPer.4 said...

do we have to justify on the chapter 3 wrap up

GiselleBPer2 said...

Don't question the awesomeness of the video. If you sing to yourself what he wrote below the video, sing it to the beat, and then it will make sense

MatteoMTAPer.4 said...

do we have to JUSTIFY!

Sean K Per.3 TA said...

Yes, I think so. But I am not entirely sure.

MatteoMTAPer.4 said...

OK Thanks

MatteoMTAPer.4 said...

Ok, thank you Sean

Paige H. Per.4 said...

i thought the wrap up was optional...didnt he say that? lik its only 2 prepare us 4 the test or something?

AndyArtist7 said...

Is Mr. Gerson going to assign the Chapter 3 wrap-up or do we do it on our own to turn it in on 10-12-10???

Yuu O Per.3 said...

@MatteoM
I asked Mr.Gerson the other day and he said you just need to know how to justify, but he also said you probably should do some with justifications.Remember you MUST show your work.

MLYHOOPS said...

of course we do matteo!!!! we usually have to anyway

MLYHOOPS said...

matteo- of course we have to justify! we always do unless he says not to

Anonymous said...

please clarify is we have to justify on the wrap up because it's a lot of writing! So r u sure or not...

SeanOPer.4 said...

@matteo yes we do...

Paige H. Per.4 said...

@ jen
huh?

GiselleBPer2 said...

I'm confused...do we absolutly HAVE to do the wrap up? and if so, i already no that we have to justify...Help!!!

Do we have to do the wrap up or not??? I'm so confused...

Today we learned different solutions on how to solve proportions. There are different ways to set up and solve proportions. We also learned about a new property the Means-Extremes Property which allows you to cross multiply to find the answer. For example: y/3=9/27
27y=9(3)Means-Extremes
27=27 divide
=1

AnalissaTPer.4 said...

do we have to do the review??

r we gonna lik go ovr the answers in class 4 the wrap up?

Natasha L Per.4 TA said...

sean and eric should we count that journal entry or no?

JennaM.Per.4 said...

For our assingment, do you do one or the other, or one of the pages or both??

JennaM.Per.4 said...

And also, Is the Wrap Up mandatory?

@TAs I already announced that journal entries need to be posted Friday for the same reasons you already mentioned.
