Rules of Exponents (CA SS:2.0)

Period 2: p.207 (1-49:odd)
Period 3: p.207 (1-55:every other odd)
Period 4: p.208 (77-95:odd)
Period 5: p.207 (1-49:odd)
Period 6: p.207 (1-55:every other odd)

If you would like the opportunity to take another chapter 4 test, I am giving you this one opportunity at a second change.  Complete p.625 (1-25) with 100% effort, 100% accuracy, and 100% complete by November 2, and I will allow you to take another form of the chapter 4 test during Power Lunch that will replace the grade of this last one.

I got an 87% on the Chapter 4 test. If I don't do as well on the retake, can I keep my original grade?

Journal Entry 10/26/10:
Today in Algebra, we reviewed the charts we completed last week on exponents. We learned that if adding or subtracting exponents with the same base,you cannot simplify it, for example, 2 to the 3rd power+ 2 to the 5th power stays the same. We also learned that if a number has a 0 exponent, it always equals 1 no matter what the base is. For example, 284 to the 0 power is 1. Last of all, when multiplying exponents, you simply add the exponents instead of multiplying them.

paula and gayatri, what ever you get on the second one is your final grade even if it is lower than the first. so if you got a good grade, i wouldn't take chances.

Today in Mr Gerson's 5th period class we learned how to multiply/divide exponents. When multiplying you can add the exponent numbers and when dividing you can subtract the exponent numbers. This rule is called the product of powers(for multiplication) and quotient of powers(for division.) This does not work for addition and subtraction which is a common error.
ex.1 x3*x2=x3+2
=x5
ex.2 x6/x2=x6-2
=x4
We also learned 2 new definitions-
1. x0=1 the definition for exponent of 0
2. r3/s-2=r3s2 the definition for negative exponents
*note*the numbers are supposed to be the exponents but I am not sure how to make them small.

Today in Mr. Gerson's 4th period class, we went over the two worksheets that these past two days. we learned that the quotient of powers says that a4/ a2= a 4-2.we learned that the product of powers says that x3 * x2= x 3+2.
We also learned that the defintion for negative exponents says that a -4= 1/a4.we also learned that the defintion for exponent of zero makes the answer 1.
examples:
1.y4/y2= y4-2= y2
2.n -2= 1/ n2
3. a0= 1

mr. gerson, if we had a 86.7 and we get lower than that on a retake are u gonna replace the 86.7 or keep the higher grade?

mr gerson for per 6 # 1-55 every other even we cant do # 55 because it goes 1,5,9,13,17,21,25,29,33,37,41,45,49,53,57 so how do we do 55?

Today we reviewed the following rules.
Product of Powers
Ex: a to the m power multiplied by a to the n power will result in keeping the a and adding the exponents together.
Quotient of Powers
Ex:a to the m power over a to the n power would result in keeping the a and subtracting n from m.
Definition for negative exponents
-any number that has a negative exponent will be able to make it in to a positive by making it a fraction. Such as 1 over a to the m power.
Definition for exponent of zero
-anything to the power of 0 is equal to 1.

Today we discussed exponents, and their powers. When multiplying exponents , add together the powers. When dividing the exponents, subtract the powers. When the power is negative, put the exponent under 1, and then simplify. We also learned about quotients of powers, and exponents, and positive exponents.

Today we went over the definitions on the fornt of our definitions. They were all about exponents, for example, The Quotient of Powers:
a^n/a^m = a^n-m Or a^3/a^2= a^3-2,a
The Definition of negative exponents:
a^-m = 1/am Or a^-2 = 1/2a
And The Definition for exponent of zero:
a^0 = 1
10^0 = 1

Today in Mr. Gerson's class we learned how to divide and multiply exponents. When you mutiply exponents with like bases, you add the exponents.
For example,
6 2 6+2
5 x 5 = 5
8
= 5
When you divide exponents with like bases, you subtract the exponents.
For example,
6
5 6-2
--- = 5
2
5 4
= 5

If the exponents are negative,
-a 1
X = ---
a
X

If zero is an exponent,
0
X = 1

Today in class, we went over the worksheet about exponents that Mrs. M.Lee gave us. We learned about adding and subtracting exponents when they are in multiplication or division. For example, if you have 5 to the 9th power times 5 to the 5th power, then all you have to do is to add the two exponents. Also, when you are trying to divide 5 to the 9th power over 5 to the 5th power, all you have to do is subtract the two numbers like 9-5. We also learned about negative exponents and exponent for 0. For negative exponent, like 5 to the -5 is equal to 1/5 to the 5th power. The sign changed because you are moving it up. Lastly, exponent for 0 is always 1
