Properties of Equality (CA SS: 5.0)

You should be averaging one hour a day (seven hours a week) practicing your algebra skills.  Your "homework" assignments are not designed to take that full hour.  You should be practicing more than these simple assignments.  Also remember that the Chapter 3 Wrap Up and Study Guide need to be completed before class on 10/12/2010.

Journal Entry #12:
Today's lesson was on the Property of Equality.
1. Addition: If a = b then a + c = b + c.
2. Multiplication: If a = b then ac = bc.
3. Division: If a = b and c does not equal 0 then a/c = b/c.
:Example
x+7=2 Given
-7|-7 AdditionProperty of Equality
--------
x+0= -5 Simplify
x=-5 IdentityProperty of Addition

Also, I learned that the symmetric property meant that the order did not matter.
:: A=B is the same as B=A

Journal Entry- 9/30/10
Today in class I learned the properties of equalites and i also learned about the symmetric property of equality. There are 4 properties, the Addition Property of Equality, the Multiplication Property of Equality, the Subtraction Property of Equality and the division Prperty of Equalities.
Addition-
If a=b then a+c=b+c
Subtraction-
a-c=b-c or a+(-c)= b+(-c)
A minus c equals b minus c
or
A plus negative c equals b plus negative c

Example:
Division-
2x=18
2/2x=18/2
1x=9 Simplify
x=9
Subtraction-
x+10=5
-10 -10
x+0=5 Simplify
x=5

Addition-
y-6=-1
+6 +6
y+0=5 Simplify
y=5

The symmetric propertyt means that a=b is equivelent to b=a

Today we took notes on the properties of equality. The four properties are the addition property of equality, the multiplication property of equality, the division property of equality, and the subtraction property of equality.We also learned the symmetric property which means that a=b is the same as b=a. examples of the other four properties are:
Multiplication- if a=b then ac=bc
Addition- if a=b then a+c=b+c
Division- if a=b and c doesn't equal 0 then a/c=b/c
some examples of problems are:
a) y-8= -3 given
+8 +8 additionprop.ofequality

y+0=5 simplify
y=5 identity prop. of addition

b) - 1/3 y=4 given
-3(-1/3 y)= -3 (4)multiplication prop. of equality
1y= -12 simplify
y=-12
identity prop. of multiplication

We worked on the property of Equality.If a=b then your able to subtract or add a number to both (a) and (b) if the number is the same.(a+c=b+c, a-c=a-b)
y-9=-4
+9 +9
y+0=5
y=5

In class we learned about the property of equality. There are five property of equality which are the addition, subtraction, division,
multiplication, and the symetric.
For Example:
Addition and Subtraction Property of Equality
a=b then a+c=b+c a=b then a-c=b-c
x + 7 = 2 x + 7 = 2
+(-7) +(-7) or -7 -7
x + 0 = -5 x + 0 = -5
Final Answer : x=-5

Multiplication Property of Equality

-1/3 y = 4 a=b then ac=bc
(-3)-1/3 = 4
1y = 4
y = 4

Division Property of Equality

2y = 8

2y = 8 a=b then a/c = b/c

1y = 4
y = 4

Symetric Property of Equality

12 = x + 6
-6 -6
6 = x + 0
6 = x
x = 6 <------ Symetric Property of Equality

I gave 5 examples today. I read the California state standard to you guys. Oh well. Here it is AGAIN copied from the California Department of Education website:

5.0 Students solve multistep problems, including word problems, involving linear equations and linear inequalities in one variable and provide justification for each step .

Why are some of you still trying to get out of doing your practice?

What is the property of reciprocals? That wasn't on the Table of Properties we have completed or in your notes.

You should all have your Table of Properties completed. If you have lost it, you need to print another one out from etusd and complete it. It will be due at the end of this chapter.

Today in class we learned about the properties of equality. So if a=b then a+c=b+c or a+(-c)=b+(-c). We also learned aout the symetric property which means if a=b then b=a. In our notes we did examples then rote what we did and the properties we used.

Journal Entry #12:
Almost everything I learned today in Algebra was based on each of the properties of equality. I already knew Addition and Multiplication propeties of equality,but something that was "some what" new was the Division and Subtraction properties of equality, because subtraction is the same thing as addition-example A.: a+(-c) = b+(-c)-Or even that division is the same thing as multiplication.
example B.: a/c = b/c is the same as a*1/c = b*1/c This all ties into:
y-8=4 Given
+8 +8 Addition Property of Equality
y-0=12 Simplify
y= 12 Identity Property of Additon
Also Symmetric Property of Equality= 6/7=x changes to x=6/7
Lastly, I learned that i should be spending an hour EVERY day doing algebra.

@property of multiplicative inverses: You are using the multiplication property of equality. Then, you might be using the property of multiplicative inverses on one side but not on the other. In which case you are just performing multiplication on both sides, so you can get away with simplify as your justification.

We learned the four equalities.
Addition: A=B then A+C=B+C
Subtraction:is the inverse of addition so just change the signs
Mulitiplication:If A=B then ac=bc
Division:If A=B then A/C=B/C
Example:
a+0=15
