Factor ax^2+bx+c (CA SS: 11.0)

Here is our factoring algorithm:

Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
Check for the Difference of Two Squares
Check for a Perfect Square Trinomial
Factor x2+bx+c
Factor ax2+bx+c
Factor by Grouping
ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY!


p.279 (1-15:odd)

Washington, D.C. update:  We have changed to Delta airlines and are now under deposit.  The final package cost is $2009.  An informational meeting will occur at El Paso Cantina on November 30th.  Due to Delta's required deposit, we have dropped the total deposit amount to $300.  All those wishing to participate must be under deposit by December 6th.  Sorry.  Betty White had to cancel on us for November 30th.  We will reschedule.

Today we learned how to solve Step 5: Factor ax^2+bx+c. We used the AMOM and diamond methods to solve trinomials and binomials.

Journal Entry 11/19/10
Today in class we learned how to factor ax^2+bx+c. First, you make a box when you multiply polynomials, and add a diamond. Second, you put the first term in the top left box then you put an x in both top right and bottom left boxes. The constant will be in the bottom right box. For the diamond, you multiply the constant and first coefficient and put it in the top part of the diamond. The bottom would be the second coefficient. Solve the diamond, then fill in the box by putting the two numbers you figured out in the box. When you solve the box, put the top numbers adding each other in the first parenthesis. The side numbers adding each other will be in the second parenthesis.

Today in Mr. Gerson's 3rd period we learned how to solve step 5 which is Factor ax^+bx+c.

Example:
3x^-21x+36=3(x^-7x+12)
*there is no box needed*

Today in Mr.Gerson's 3rd period, we learned how to step 5 in "Factoring Algorithm":

-Factor ax^2+bX+c.

We used the box & dimond method.
EX:
8X^2+10X-3

so the box method it would looks like this (kinda):

then you use the dimond method:

<*: top of diamond
>*: bottom of diamond

the second factor goes on the bottom of the diamond.
the first and last factor multiplyd together goes at the top.

once you finish the diamond, plug the numbers in the box.

= (2X+3)(4X-1)
SO,

8X^2+10X-3 = (2X+3)(4X-1).
