Here is our factoring algorithm:

Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
Check for the Difference of Two Squares
Check for a Perfect Square Trinomial
Factor x2+bx+c
Factor ax2+bx+c
Factor by Grouping
ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY!

@Marcus you are not the only Marcus. You still need to fix your display name to include last initial and period. Your journal entry needs to be rewritten. The homework is on the blog already. You need to summarize a step or explain something new. Bring in an interesting problem that hasn't been discussed before. Write something interesting or helpful that shows your understanding of what is going on in this unit.

Factorin Algorithm
-Remove the greatest monomial factor
To remove the greatest monomial factor you have to find a common factor.
Example: 2m+4
to find the greastest monomial factor you can find all common factors or if it is a small number then you could do it mentally
2m+4= 2(m+2)
Example:36m-28
=4(9m-7)

Math Journal Entry:
Today in math class, we did a lesson check that took almost the whole period!We only had about 5 minutes of class left.We did not do any notes today in class.
Example: Factor 12x^4 - 3x^2 - 54.
Steps...
1. Factor out the GCF of 3= 3(4x^4 - x^2 - 18).
2. 3(4x^2 - 9)(x^2 + 2).
3. Identify (4x^2 - 9) as a binomial that can be factored into (2x + 3)(2x - 3).
Answer is 3(2x + 3)(2x - 3)(x^2 + 2)

11/30/10 P.3 Journal Entry
Today we first went over our homework (evens) then later took a Lesson Check. We didn't have time for notes but we are learning/reviewing the methods below..
Factoring Algorithm *important steps*
-Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
- Check for a perfect square trinomial
- Factor x squared+bx+c
- Factor ax squared+bx+c
- Factor by grouping
- ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY!!
Examples..
x squared+3x
= x(x+3)
For this problem you just do the first step.
Another one is 47x cubed + 3
= IT IS NOT FACTORABLE
You can't do any steps to it.
As you know we have homework (w.k.sheet)
and we (some) need to study more.

Journal Entry: 11/30/10

Today, our class had a lesson check on factoring. It reviewed the first four steps of the factoring algorithm. It helped me a lot to understand that not every factoring problem requires a diamond or a factoring square. For example, a problem like 3m[4]-3 only requires simple factoring by using Step 2 which is check for the difference of 2 squares. You would have to undergo Step 1 and remove the 3 since it's the greatest common factor. Then, factor (m[4]-1), so it will become (m[2]+1)(m[2]-1), according to step 2. Now, it can be factored even more into (m[2]+1)(m+1)(m-1), so the final answer would be 3(m[2]+1)(m+1)(m-1). Now, it is pretty simple and I'm sure I will get a much better lesson check score tomorrow.

Tody we had scarce amount of time after the lesson check. We took no notes for a change and we are still reviewing the steps for factoring algorithm.
ex. (for factor ax^2+bx+c)
5x^2+12x+7
step one:make a 5x^2][ \35/
box and a dimond ][7 /12\

step two:fill in \35/ 5x^2][5x
remaing parts of 7 -- 5 7x][7
the box and dimond /12\

step three: x 1
fill in outside 5x| 5x^2][5x
parts of the
box 7| 7x][7

step four: =(5x+7)(x+1)
write your answer

Math Journal Entry: November 30, 2010
Today we just went over the homework and did a lesson check. we couldn't do notes today. so one of the steps of The Factoring Algorithm is...
Removing the greatest monomial factor.
for example:
24x+36
you find the common factor which is 12.
Then the answer is = 12(2x+3)

Today we had the hardest lesson check. Most of the people probably got the one with the answer "not factorable".

1.Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
2.Check for a perfect square trinomial
3.Factor x squared+bx+c
4.Factor ax squared+bx+c
5.Factor by grouping
6.ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY!!!

The one that is squared but postive is not factorable.
49+x^2 = not factorable
