Factoring Review (CA SS: 11.0)

We reviewed steps 1 through 5.  We will cover Factor by Grouping tomorrow.

Here is our factoring algorithm:

Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
Check for the Difference of Two Squares
Check for a Perfect Square Trinomial
Factor x2+bx+c
Factor ax2+bx+c
Factor by Grouping
ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY!


p.284 (1-12:all)

I think it is time for a Lesson Check.

When I walked into class, I saw that Mr. Gerson was back. He asked us if we had any questions on our HW. Then we passed up our HW as usual. We did some problems on the board like:
3m^4-3=3(m^4-1)
=3(m^2+1)(m^2-1)
=3(m^2+1)(m+1)(m-1)
We then did some more problems like that. Basically, we reviewed the steps we learned already. Mr. Gerson assigned our HW and most of us completed in class.

Today, we reviewed what we have done the past two weeks, which was factoring polynomials. We practiced and did some problems such as:

Exp.:x^6+8x^3+16=(x^3+4)(x^3+4)
=(x^3+4)^2
Then we were assigned twelve review problems which were fairly simple.

So, after going over our assignment, we went straight to our notes; "factoring polynomials"
Then he asked our class about the 7steps (factoring algorithm).
Remember these?
1)Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
2)Check for the Difference of Two Squares
3)Check for a Perfect Square Trinomial
4)Factor x2+bx+c
5)Factor ax2+bx+c
6)Factor by Grouping
7)ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY!

Then we practiced total 5 problems on board, showing different methods to solve.
A) 3m^4-3=3(m^4-1)
=3(m^2+1)(m^2-1)
=3(m^2+1)(m+1)(m-1)
B)x^6+8x^3+16=(x^3+4)(x^3+4)
=(x^3+4)^2
C)2x^4+8x^3+6x^2=2x^2(x^2+4x+3)
=2x^2(x+3)(x+1)
You would solve ex;(B&C) by using the diamond.

After he gave us our homework and it was on our own.

Period 5

When the class walked in, the first thing we did was turn in our homework as usual. Next, we reviewed the lessons that we learned from last two weeks and solved some problems together on the board.

7 steps:
1.) Remove the Greatest Monomial
2.) Check the Difference of Two Squares
3.) Check for a perfect Square Trinomial
4.) Factor x^2 + bx + c
5.) Factor ax^2 + bx + c
6.) Factor by grouping (going to learn tomorrow)
7.) Always factor COMPLETELY

One of the examples we did in class:
2x^4 + 8x^3 + 6x^2
=2x^2(x^2 + 4x +3)
= 3
3 > < 1
4
=2x^2(x+3)(x+1)

After we finished taking notes, we started on our today's homework.

Today we we reviewed the steps of Factoring Algorithum which are:

5.Factor ax(squared)+bx+c
6.Factor by grouping
7.ALWAYS FACTOR COMPLETELY

We did a few examples:
a)3m(to the 4th)-3
=3(m(to the 4th)-1) step 1.
=3(m2+1)(m2-1) step 2.
=3(m2+1)(m+1)(m-1)step 2.(again)

f)y5-2y4-35y3
=y3(y2-2y-35)step 1.
=y3(y+5)(y-7)step 2.
(in problem F. you use the diamond)

We did many other problems like that.

Today's lesson was easy.We solved aproblems alittle more complicated then the basics.I think todays main point was that when you factor an equation, you can f actor it down more.I forgot to bring my journal, so a problem from the book was

3t^2-27
=3(t^2-9)
=3(t-3)(t+3)
before we were dismissed from clas, for h.w. we were assigned 12 problems from page284

Today we went over our homework , asked questions and turned it in as always.

we solved some answers on the board like ...
A.) m^4-3=3(m^4-1)
=3(m^2+1)(m^2-1)
=3(m^2+1)(m+1)(m-1)
and some other questions that involved the box or diamond.
So , we just reviewed the steps:
Remove the Greatest Monomial Factor
Check for the Difference of Two Squares
Check for a Perfect Square Trinomial
Factor x2+bx+c
Factor ax2+bx+c
Factor by grouping
Always factor completely .
and tomorrow Mr.Gerson said we were gonna work on the Factor by Grouping .

And this is what i learned today :D
