Differences of Real Numbers (CA SS: 1.0)

We used the definition of subtraction to rewrite each of our problems as addition in class. Now, we will use virtual manipulatives to look at subtraction.

Follow the link from here to use some virtual manipulatives.

Fold a piece of paper in fourths, so you can draw four of the problems you try.
Write a paragraph talking about the experience of using these virtual manipulatives and relate them to our Atom Model for addition.

Today's summary paragraphs will be published to the blog by Madison B. (Per. 1), Erica M. (Per. 2), Jonathan M. (Per. 3), Carl K. (Per. 4), Hannah R. (Per. 5), Shota S. (Per. 6)

Mark, did you go play with the virtual manipulatives yet? Give a visual representation (a.k.a. drawing) of 4 of those problems.

For the virtual manipulatives do we draw each step or just the result?

On the Virtual Minipulatives, they showed me how I can add and subtract positive and negative numbers easier. For some people, seeing it visually can help a lot; as it and it did for me. This relates to our atom models because they both show positives and negatives with + or -. The Atom Model and Virtual Minipulatives both are visual and very helpful. You will always get the right answer with these models.

So we can draw either the steps or the solution as the drawing? Does it have to be in ink?

Seewoo, Draw the Atom model for each problem, then write the result in the box. Then write a paragraph about the experience. And James, there is a kid in our period who is a 7th grader who has done it, so I would ask him.

fridays notes were about the differences of rational numbers. we learned that the definition of subtraction has a lot of rules like the order matters a lot and is really important. A rational number is one that can be a fraction or ratio. we learned how to change a subtraction problem into a addition problem. as soon as you make a subtraction problem an addition problem you solve it and it becomes easier to find your answer.

I checked the hyperlink this (Sunday) morning, and it is still good. The site and its address are intact.

Those of you having issues might try updating (or loading if you do not have it) Java. It is free.

Where can you get Java? Well, java.com ofcourse.

This lesson was about the definition of subtraction. We learned how to change subtraction into addition. If you were in Mrs. Calames class we learned it as skip change flip.

Hannah, what are you flipping? I think you are referring to the definition of DIVISION.

Paragraph on the back is just fine.

Color is always better.
